ANCESTRY

Father:  Michael Langley (1819-1906)    Mother: Margaret Cavanagh (1866c-1929)

Father: Michael Langley (1819), born Caltra, Co. Galway, son of William Langley and Jane Coughlan. Married Jane Stockwell, from Galway, 1846.  Leaving behind his wife and a large number of children  Michael Langley emigrated to Australia arriving on the vessel 'The Naval Reserve'  Feb. 22 1867 (details of the journey can be found in this newspaper article from 18 in I68).  The following year, 1868, his wife Jane passed away in Ireland.  In the following years Michael brought his family to Australia.  His brother James, with his wife Ellen (nee Mottershead) and their family followed Michael to  to Australia (1878).  They settled mainly in Sydney.  Two of Michael's children died very young.  Michael worked as a prison warden in several prisons in Australia,  he later owned a shop in Piper Street,

Michael later married Margaret Cavanagh who was in her early 20s, in 1886 in Sydney.  Their first child, a daughter Mary Olive, died in her first year. William Thomas was born on 23 Jan 1888 in Sydney.

Mother: Margaret Cavanagh, was born in Ireland to Stephen Cavanagh and Mary Anne (nee Byrne) from Wexford and Wicklow. She emigrated as an infant in  1866  on The Great Pacific.  Mary Ann, Margaret's mother, died on the long voyage to Australia and she was buried at sea.  A  couple known to her father, Cecilia and Bernard Day, took care of  little Margaret for the rest of the voyage, they subsequently adopted her as her father, Stephen Cavanagh, was going to 'the diggings' and was unable to look after her.  Margaret lived with the Day family in Wagga Wagga, Sydney for most of her childhood.

Michael Langley, his wife Margaret and their baby Liam returned to Ireland by boat, via
Southampton and Dublin in 1891.  Their luggage was stolen in Southampton consequently they had very few possessions when they arrived in Dublin. They went to live in Tuam, Co. Galway.  Michael Langley died in July 1906, he is buried in the Tuam Graveyard on the Athenry Road..

Liam and his mother, Margaret,  moved  Dublin in 1917 following Liam's release from Reading Jail (1916 Rising), they settled in Drumcondra.

James  Langley and his family remained in Australia.  James died in Australia around 1894.

Around this time,1890's, Michael's sister, Mary Langley, emigrated to New York, she married James Walker in Loughrea, Co. Galway in 1844, Thomas Langley (possibly another brother) was her best man. Mary and James  had two daughters (Church records). A letter  from Mrs Walker, in New York, to Micheal, in Sydney, thanking him for a gift of money (1882), is in the possession of the family.
